In the summer of 1995, Minx and Grace Millo, two friends from Hell’s kitchen, NYC got together and formed amanda’s waiting. Since then their dynamic has yielded an impressive musical force. amanda’s waiting passionate and assured self-titled 1997 debut album was released to critical acclaim which raised the band’s profile noticeably.

Collectively their influences are varied with Blondie, Pretenders, Annie Lennox and Sass Jordan being Minx’ favorites while Concrete Blonde, Leonard Cohen and The Rolling Stones are some of Grace’s inspirations. (We don’t sound like them but we admire their art and love their spirit) Their “killer” harmonies are what define the true sound of amanda’s waiting. Grace, a prolific songwriter wakes up in the middle of the night with complete songs in her head, arrangements and all. Minx, called “the next rock-diva-in-waiting” by NY Newsday is the perfect voice for those songs, capturing their passionate spirit.

Canadian-born singer/songwriter/guitarist Mimi Cross lives just outside of NYC. She plays throughout the tri-state area including Manhattan clubs like The Living Room, The Bitter End, The Den and The Mercury Lounge.

Cross began performing solo several years ago in Asbury Park, N.J. where she has shared the bill with national acts such as Chris Whitley and Jill Sobule among others. She has opened at the PNC Bank Arts Center for artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Lauryn Hill, and she continues to travel up to Boston occasionally to play at The Kendall Cafe.

The influences of Cross’ classical training, as well as her jazz studies, can both be heard in her songwriting. Grammy award winning artist Rosanne Cash describes Cross’ unusual work: “Mimi fuses delicacy and power, heart and gut. Her writing and singing are inspiring, evocative and refreshing. It’s a pleasure to have discovered her work.”

My Projects:

Mimi Cross has a nine song independent CD release entitled Monkey Trap, and is currently working on material for a new CD.

Obsidian

The Band:

Obsidian are a four-piece original hard rock band from Cairns, North Queensland, Australia. Formed late in 1998, Obsidian has earned a strong following throughout North Queensland via a strong and active live presence and vigorous promotion. Playing live and loud to an active audience is one of the passions for all members of Obsidian and they seek to do so at every opportunity with semi regular gigs at Johnno’s Blues Bar, and several feature gigs, festivals and charity fundraisers where Obsidian donate their performance.

Obsidian have been labelled volcanic rock by followers and venues alike and they all agree that the blend of styles which make Obsidian unique can only be described as Volcanic Rock. With haunting and harsh vocals combined with the power and emotion of the music, Obsidian reach out and grasp the audience in an explosion of audio and visual entertainment propelling them into the next generation of heavy music. Forged from the passion and desire to get their original music to the world, Obsidian is Stacy Davidson (vocals/guitar), Ben Johnson (lead guitar), Phil Reay (bass) and Paul Murray (drums).

Its an idea that has been left unrecognized in today’s candy-pop, ear-filler music scene, the idea that music can heal the soul in ways no other artistic medium can.

Think of the way Joni Mitchell’s Blue album can bring you back to the things in life that are important, or the way Tori Amos’ Little Earthquakes lets you know that you aren’t the only who feels on the outside of it all.

With a voice that can be sweeter than a lover’s kiss in the morning, and as balls out as any Janis Joplin tune, Biddy has found the ability to give comfort to a wounded soul, or give laughter to the blue, or just make you shake your damn butt to the sounds of folk-n-groove.

A solo album entitled Looking Glass was her first recording effort and it captured her voice over just the minimal accompaniment of her guitar, her piano, and some dear friends and family on background vocals, visit our storefront at CDBaby for a look and listen.

She has been playing clubs in NYC with the help of her partner in crime and music, J Nichols. The Phatty J joined Ms. Sullivan in October of 1999, and their collaboration over the past year has yielded a new spin on the idea of healing music. They entered the studio over the New Year’s holiday armed with songs that range from grooves that scream for empowerment to ballads that admire and cherish the people who have made them who they are.

Get to know her and experience the best gift that she can give you, music.

My Projects:

Looking Glass (1998) 9-song disc
Biddy B-sides (1999) 3 song demo
Live at the Unitarian (2000) live disc of a recital in Ithaca, NY. Video as well.
Healing Begins With Me (2001) A compilation of singer/songwriters in NYC, slated to be released this summer. We’re really excited about it, be sure to check it out!!
Upcoming 5 song demo, sure to rock the house in 2001!!

Orchard And Vines

Cindy Tomlinson – vocals
Ted Koppman – guitars
Ron F – drums
Jesse Cullen – bass
Elinor Harshenin – cello

“Cindy Tomlinson puts her lyrics to work, using vivid imagery to heighten the themes within each song and polish off the overall surreal quality inherent in each.”

Audiogalaxy.com describes Orchards & Vines as “musical psychedelics, hinting at the past and forecasting the future” with “an integrity that would seem to withstand time” and “immediately sets the band apart from the rest.”

Showcasing stratospheric rock with soaring female vocals, Orchards & Vines crashes full force into the new century, blowing open the floodgates of sound like a double-strength hit of Timothy Leary’s finest!

“Orchards & Vines are an excellent example of a band taking control and helping themselves. They’ve completely bypassed the normal record label route. Instead, O&V have opted for self distribution, Internet promotions, placement on download sites like AudioGalaxy, and good old fashioned word of mouth.” ~ Chad Kempfert, About.com Alternative Music Guide

Formed by vocalist Cindy Tomlinson and guitarist Ted Koppman in 1994, Orchards & Vines expanded to include drummer Ron F in ’95 and cellist Elinor Harshenin in ’96. The addition of Jesse Cullen in 1999 ended a long search for the right bass player, accelerating the recording process that saw the completion of their debut CD, Tomorrow’s Yesterday.

My Projects:

“In The Darkness” has been garnering considerable attention, becoming one of the first Canadian songs to be promoted by Napster’s Discover Featured Music program and recently hitting the MP3.com Alternative General Top 30.

“Country-fried folk/rock for city girls with mud on their boots”.

Amy is a country girl from rural Pennsylvania who left her small town for the city and found herself equally at home on the L train as she was on the farm. Originally intending to pursue stardom as an operatic coluratora, she preferred shots of tequila as her pre-show warm-up to hours of vocalese and soon, the music department suggested she try theater. She moved to NYC after college to study acting and began a successful career acting in off-broadway and regional theater and teaching workshops on Shakespeare in the NYC public schools. Somewhere in between commercial auditions and Shakespeare in the Parking Lot, where poetic angst is easy to be found, she taught herself guitar and began writing songs in her early 20′s. Amy’s first band, the folk duo Edith O., garnered critical raves with its 1997 release “Tattooed Queen” and continues as a Top 100 Seller on CdBaby.com.

The break-up of Edith O. (well… “break-up” being kind: her co-lead “just forgot” about the record release party) in 1998 gave Amy the opportunity to blossom as a solo performer and take the lead in her songwriting and performing. With a nod to the Johnny Cash and Ernest Tubbs records she was raised on, she writes “a unique blend of urban and country, incorporating pop hooks into a rootsy medium.” Her enthralling voice and its delicate timbre resonates throughout all of her songs and performances, whether playing solo acoustic or supported by her band– John Abbey on bass, Jagoda on drums and James Mastro on guitar.

A Songwriting Magazine Lyric Winner and a Finalist in Guitargirls.com’s Song Contest, Amy’s songs go beyond the typical folk storytelling, evolving into a far more complex ground where her poetry shines. Americana, alt-country, new jack folk, urban angsty pop, whatever you wanna call it, you’ll be humming along!

My Projects:

Amy’s solo debut “Fable” will be released June 2001 on her own label, Twangirl Records. Maestro John Abbey produced.

THEID

Tim Beckett – Guitar/Vocals
Dina Oppizio – Bass
J – Drums
Pits – Guitar

http://www.theidfoundation.com

With the dawn of a new Millenium, time demands a new sound. This sound has emerged from the depths of the UK in the creation of The Id.
Not complying with the demand for more Manchester Brit-Pop Oasis clones, The Id are a new wave of the new wave of alternativism. As they push forward the boundaries of music with off-beat timings, alien-like guitar effects and unconventional structures to their songs, they open the gates of music to the rise of the Millenium.
The Id conform to no labels.
For instance, it would not be possible to categorise them as mere “Metal”,”Grunge”, or “Indie” band, having compared songs such as the furious “Discount Directory” to the visionary “Freezing”. The Id’s music is diverse in their rhythm, tones and utilitarian lyrics – from the political to the surreal.
The Id have the potential to appeal to a wide audience and re-write the alternative scene. They have already acquired a good following and many gigs across England in numerous highly respected venues. In conjunction with their political beliefs, these include events in aid of Greenpeace and Amnesty International. In addition to this, The Id have had significant radio airplay on stations such as Manchester’s Radio Space FM (including a live unplugged session), City Centre Life FM and Liverpool’s Crash FM. They rocked Liverpool at In The City ’99 – so much that the venue’s P.A. blew halfway through the set. But The Id still finished with Guitar-hurling Id-style.

My Projects:

They are currently planning to move to New York on a mission to take over the States, having received unimaginable positive response from a number of significant music industry delegates at the South By SouthWest Festival in Austin, Texas.

Kenny Aaronson

“Fairchild’s voice can recall a great glorious bird that’s just flown into the room. Her pop songwriting is headed for advanced beauty (William Monahan, NY Press).
Whether using her unique lyrical and melodic sensibilities to craft songs that exhibit great emotional depth, illuminate the landscape of our human condition or simply make us smile at the folly of it all, the end result is clearly the product of a talented artist communicating her life experience, insights and observations into some beautiful, rocking music. According to Kim Fowley, “If Tom Petty and Sarah McLachlan had a baby, she’d be it.”

Amy Fairchild left college in ’92 and launched her musical career in Northampton, Massachusetts; lending her superlative voice, self-taught guitar riffs and dexterous song writing talents to several established local bands. By late ’93, she’d developed a portfolio of original tunes and was fronting her own band—a band that soon became one of the hottest acts in the region. Her debut CD, She’s Not Herself, self-produced and released in 1996, was voted Best Album of the Year by several local papers. She has opened for such major artists as Joan Osborne, Hall and Oates and The Marshall Tucker Band and appears on, among others, Cliff Eberhardt’s “Mona Lisa” and Dar William’s “End of Summer.” Fairchild’s 1998 appearance at The Newport Folk Festival was greeted with profuse enthusiasm. Further success ensued in the spring of ’99 when she won the New York City Lilith Fair Talent Competition, earning the right to perform at the Jones Beach Amphitheater with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde, Sarah McLachlan and others.

Fairchild moved to New York City in 1998, assembled a talented (and loyal) band, and set about performing at (and filling) clubs all over downtown (the place to be) NYC. Lately the muse has been kind. The result has been several excellent new songs, and happily, with the help of the Big Town’s most able musicians and producers (Kenny White, Jon Herington, Kenny Aaronson), an EP of fresh material was released in September of 2000. Demo Graphic features four new studio tracks, live versions of two new songs, and a formerly secret, hidden, old favorite officially unveiled for the first time. She is currently planning a regional tour for the spring of 2001.

johnnyyoung

Johnny Young – Vox/Guitar
Jairo Ruiz – Bass
Lex Dunbar – Drums and BU vox

http://www.johnnyyoung.com

Hard rockin and deeply groovin, a little trippy, a little bluesy. Johnny Young is raging across the US supporting their second cd, “Drone” This three piece dynamo is garnering radio support, new venues and fans on a weekly basis. Lead singer and guitarist Johnny Young is the seventh son from a musical family of ten, He began his music career at age 8, when he was thrown out of piano lessons for improvising on “Go Tell Aunt Rhodie”, by the evil Dr. Barnett of Rumania who toldJohnny’s parents about his insubordination and refusal to obey every command. Blind since age seventeen, Johnny cut his teeth on a world tour with former ROLLING STONES guitarist Mick Taylor as the singer and keyboardist in The Mick Taylor Band. Since then, he has bruised his legs and his forehead on numerous stages across the North American continent and around the world, performing, recording and producing various projects from New York to Tokyo. Among Johnny’s production credits are a list of known and unknown artists too long to run away with here. If you’re THAT interested, feel free to write. His own projects have included the CMJ charting DARK BLACK PAST, as well as MUDGOD. A diverse musical talent and multi instrumentalist, Johnny’s composing won him an Emmy award in 1996 for the music in the spine chilling fire drama in the Guiding Light. Soon after he found his calling by picking up on an SG plugged into a Marshall amp, (cranked up of course). Today, Johnny works day and night creating music in his studio laboratory located above a neighborhood bar somewhere in Brooklyn, New York. A modern day ‘frenzied Mozart’ who’s forever working on something: showcasing the band’s newest materials around town, including memorable shows at CMJ 2000 & 2001, this ‘wizard in the mill’ has taken the concoction entitled “Drone” on the road Johnny also plays Keyboards.

Jairo Ruiz – Bass, Skim Board From the slums of Park Slope, Brooklyn comes the newest member to join Johnny Young, Jairo Ruiz. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Jairo brings to the band a fierce combination of skill, melody and in-your-face-bass to an already rip-roaring sound. Jairo has performed with numerous bands and musicians, and has performed all over New York City. His ambition, drive and thirst for a kick-ass show only intensifies the band’s sound and energy. Be prepared for a whole new Johnny Young now that fire has been added to the flames.

Lex Dunbar – Drums and BU vox “Banging on those f__king pots”, (as mom would say), since age 3, ‘Sexy Lexy’ quickly became a big fish somewhere between Albany and Rochester. Like his idol, little Ricky Ricardo, Lex soon became a child prodigy, and although he never landed that spin-off t.v. series he dreamed of as a kid, he did go on to tour the globe, (catching as many football games as he possibly could), with various well known artists such as AVALON, THIRST, and the international chart topping LISA-LISA among many others. A very straight up kinda guy with an eye or three for talent and a deep desire for the factory fresh smell of a new tour bus. Lex’s incredible drumming skills give Johnny Young a powerful dose of rip-raging ‘in your face’ percussive medicine. Not a prescription for the weak of heart, but definitely what the doctor ordered!!! OVERDOSE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

My Projects:

Currently Johnny Young is touring, playing clubs and colleges performing songs from their second “Drone” , and their debut cd, “Shed Your Skin”, as well as plenty of new material which will appear on their next, release, “On”
